Mental Health Handbook

Mental Health isn't a destination, it's a journey. whether you are navigating stress, seeking purpose, or simply want to feel more grounded in your daily life, you are not alone. At Fulfil-Ment Aberdeen, we believe everyone deserves the support, tools, and safe space that they need to explore what matters most to them.

Mental Health Myth vs. Fact

Let's be honest, most of us wait until we are knee-deep in our struggles before we reach out and ask for help, telling ourselves we should 'handle it alone', that our problems are not 'big enough', or that therapy is just 'paying someone to listen'. But what if we told you that professional support isn't about weakness, that it is about working smarter with your own mind?

Myths around Mental Health tend to keep talented, capable people stuck. we tend to listen to so many 'messages' about when it's 'okay' to ask for help and most of them are not true! let us look through some of these Myths vs. facts:

Myth: “Only people with serious issues need counselling and/or mental health mentoring”

Fact: Counselling and Mental Health mentoring is for anyone who wants to improve their mental health, relationships or even their overall wellbeing. Whether you are dealing with daily stress, navigating a life transition or simply want to grow as a person, Counselling and Mental Health mentoring can help you!

Myth: “Therapy/Life Coaching/Mental Health Mentoring makes you dependent on your therapist/coach/mentor”

Fact: The goal of these processes is to make the client self-sufficient! Which lets the client learn to use the tools they have to independently navigate and manage challenges they face. this truth is far from the long-term dependency myth that surrounds these processes.

Myth: “Life Coaches just tell you to 'manifest' your dreams and life goals”

Fact: Evidence-based coaching uses neuroscience and behaviour psychology to create action plans for clients. some examples of these are breaking procrastination cycles or clarifying career goals. Strong coaching practice does not depend on vague law of attraction trends like manifestation.

Myth: “Therapists just blame everything on your childhood”

Fact: Modern therapy like, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, focuses on present solutions while acknowledging how past experiences shape a client's current patterns. while some therapists might explore your childhood, they do so to identify learned patterns and to change these patterns rather than to allocate blame.

Myth: “Positive thinking can cure anxiety/depression”

Fact: Toxic positivity can backfire and is a potentially harmful misconception about mental health. while gratitude practices support mental health, it is ONE tool and not a standalone process. Real healing requires acknowledging difficult emotions and building coping skills, NOT just slapping on a smile!

Here's the truth: Mental Health is not about the quick fixes or about the perfect attitudes - it is about showing up for YOURSELF, with the right tools and support. These myths persist because they sound simple, but your struggles are not 'just' anything, they are real and are not as simple as these myths draw them out to be, and most importantly they are workable. Every client is special and different, there isn't a one size fits all. Now that we have busted these misconceptions, we would love to hear which one surprised you the most? is there another myth you've encountered that needs challenging? send us an email or drop us a DM on our social media sites to let us know!

If reading this made you realise that you have been tough on yourself, remember that understanding these myths is the first step. Doing something different is what creates change. Your Mental Health matters and Fulfil-Ment Aberdeen will be here with you every step of the way! If you feel ready or are considering the next step, contact us for a chat.
